Author's Chapter Notes:
Special Update 18-Feb-08: The formatting of this story has undergone a major change because I am about to get very busy with schoolwork and won't have a lot of time to post. The chapters are going away and instead I will post all of the sections that occur during specific time periods under one heading. Sorry for the inconvenience. If you have already read this story, you really are going to want to start on the Twilight Chapter to avoid confusion.

The first Twilight story that I read after finding this site was Eowyn77's Facing the Music and I will forever be grateful to her for inspiring me.
Facing the Music got me to thinking about what we do and don't know about Mike Newton, who is he really? Unrequited was written back in October/November of last year and it sat on my harddrive for several months before I remembered I had it. So I sent it off to Alcyone to see what she could make of it and it sort of just took off. As usual, she did a top notch job editing. She should really be listed as a coauthor because she wrote and rewrote many of the transitions and worked her special brand of magic on the story! She really is the Queen of the Volturi.
For those of you interested, some of the chapters in this will have special editions posted on my livejournal account. This is because Alcyone had a lot of fun writing a running commentary on the narration and I got a kick out of reading her comments and responding to them. All chapters with special editions will contain a livejournal link.

Life resembles a novel more often than novels resemble life. ~ George Sand
Life doesn’t always turn out the way you plan. That’s a line from a movie my sometimes girlfriend Jessica once made me watch with her. It was a total chick flick, but it had its moments. The part with the paperboy was classic. But the real point here is what the movie was about. A woman, I think her name was Lucy, thought she was in love with this guy, totally based on the way he looked. Later she realized that she was really in love with someone else, who was not the movie star type, but instead, a normal good-looking guy, who was her best friend. Like I said, total chick flick, but since it definitely has applicable parallels to my life, I figure that it was a good place to start. Maybe I should explain this all better, make it easier to understand…
For a senior in high school, I am a reasonably well adjusted guy. The only really major thing to ever happen to in my life was when my Dad moved us from sunny Southern California to the rainy Olympic Peninsula in Washington. I was ten. We left La Verne, California, population 32,000, a city located in the heart of Los Angeles County where the average monthly rainfall is three quarters of an inch and sunshine is plentiful, and came to Forks, population 3,200, which is located out in the middle of a rainforest. The average monthly rainfall is eight and a half inches, so cloudy days are the norm. Although it sounded like it would suck, things turned out to not be so bad.
In California, I was one of the many. We lived in a gated community where every house was a cookie cutter replica of its neighbors, something that is very typical of the suburban Los Angeles. All the kids were exactly like me; they had a father who worked in the city, making decent money and a pretty mother who was involved in the PTA, but still kept her weekly appointment at the nail salon. Forks is different; instead of being one of the many, I am something out of the ordinary. In Forks, most kids’ parents either work at one of the correction centers or are in the logging industry. My parents own a sporting goods store, one that does very well—around six figures a year—in a town where the average yearly income is around $30,000.
So now, eight years later, I am one of the most popular guys at Forks High School. That popularity is, of course, helped by my looks. I don’t mean to brag or anything, but I was a cute kid and by the time I hit puberty, the cuteness turned into All-American boy good looks. With blond hair and blue eyes and just shy of six feet, I am one of best looking guys at school. When you want to BE someone in the social hierarchy of high school, this is crucial. Aside from the looks thing, everyone thinks I am cool to be around. Always up for any scheme that involves fun, I have my own car, and my yearly visits to California keep me connected to the real world.
Yes, I have been able to acclimate pretty well and find my niche here in Forks. Making friends comes easy for a guy like me and I pretty much rule the school. I get along well with most of my classmates, helped in part by my skills at hoops and Halo and also by my outgoing nature. The best part about being me is that I am the veritable boy-next-door. This makes dating really easy on me. Any escapades I may or may not have been involved in are not fodder for the Forks gossip circuit, which is saying something. Parents like me, so I don’t have any problems on that front. The girls all adore me; they can’t help it so what can I say? At any given time, I have several viable prospects to choose from. In fact, I pretty much have my pick of girls, all of whom are just waiting for me to notice them, and all of whom would give anything to go out with me. All except one, and that’s where the movie thing comes in.
